Tank Memorial
Landmark
The M-4 Sherman tank, sitting on a triangular plot of land at Goldsborough and North Main streets was bought from the government for $100 in 1950 and donated to the city for use as a monument. The 75 year-old military tank has been standing guard just north of the Crown Point Square for decades.
The tank originally faced downtown Crown Point to protect the Old Lake County Courthouse, but in 1987, a crane was used to lift the tank and turn it north, reportedly to face “the enemy.”
Over the years, the city has held Memorial Day ceremonies at the site and more recently has started holding holiday lighting ceremonies there
